This category is three different jobs wearing one label. Filing links is a bookmark manager's job. Reading long articles later, cleanly, offline, is a read-it-later app's job. Keeping a page exactly as it looked the day you saved it is an archiver's job. The tools overlap just enough to be confusing, so decide which job you are actually hiring for before comparing star counts.

How to choose among the three jobs

If the job is filing, Linkding is the reference answer: tags, full-text search, a browser extension, and a REST API in a 256 MB container that deploys in minutes. Its plainness is the point — and its one real limitation is listed plainly in the catalogue: no automatic archiving. If the job is reading, Wallabag has been the self-hosted Pocket since 2013: clean article extraction, annotations, mobile apps, and export to ePub and PDF, with the known caveat that extraction occasionally mangles a stubborn site. If the job is preserving, ArchiveBox (28,180 stars) saves HTML, PDFs, and screenshots per URL and will happily eat storage doing it. And if you want one tool that leans toward all three, Karakeep — 28,605 stars despite a 2024 debut, formerly Hoarder — bookmarks links, notes, and images with full-page archiving and AI auto-tagging. Two costs come with it: it wants 1 GB of RAM where Linkding wants a quarter of that, and the AI tagging needs an API key, which for most people means a paid external service unless they point it at a local model.

Save the link, lose the page

The trap in this category is discovering it too late. A bookmark list quietly rots — sites shut down, posts get deleted, paywalls drop in front of pages that were open when you saved them — and a pile of dead URLs with good tags is still a pile of dead URLs. If a link would hurt to lose, pick a tool that stores the page, not just the address: Karakeep, Linkwarden, or ArchiveBox. If you only ever save links you could re-find in a search engine, skip the archiving overhead and enjoy Linkding's speed.

Linkding for fast, minimal link filing. Karakeep for a searchable everything-scrapbook with archived copies. Wallabag if the backlog you are managing is articles you mean to read, not links you mean to keep.

Default for a first-timer: Linkding. It is the smallest commitment in the category, imports standard browser bookmark exports, and if you later outgrow it, your data leaves as cleanly as it arrived.
