Do the export first. Settings → Export all workspace content hands you a folder of Markdown files and a pile of CSVs, and that pile is an honest map of your Notion habit: mostly Markdown means nearly any tool below will take you in; dozens of CSVs mean you live in Notion databases, and databases are the one thing no replacement absorbs cleanly. Shop for the tool after you know which kind of refugee you are.

What you gain and what you give up

The gains are structural. Offline stops being Notion's perpetual weak spot and becomes the default - AppFlowy, AFFiNE, and SiYuan are all local-first. Your notes end up in formats with a future: Markdown and SQL rather than a proprietary cloud. Nobody bills you per seat. The give-ups are equally concrete: the template gallery, the integration API ecosystem, Notion AI, and one-click public page sharing all stay behind. So does operational maturity - the self-hosted sync backends for AppFlowy and AFFiNE are the newest, least-proven components of both projects, which matters if sync failure would ruin your week.

Which replacement fits which user

The CSV half is lossy by design: relations, rollups, formulas, and saved views are simply gone, and you rebuild them by hand in whatever you chose. AppFlowy reads Notion exports directly; for Outline you import the Markdown tree and reorganise. Assume one evening for a small workspace and a weekend if the CSV pile was thick.

Where I'd land

Solo: AppFlowy, kept local-first, adopting its self-hosted sync once you have tested restores. Teams of 3 or more: Outline, licence caveat accepted, because collaborative editing and permissions are what the team was actually paying Notion for. Quick-capture people: Memos and nothing else.
