About SelfHostIndex

SelfHostIndex is an independent directory of self-hosted and open-source software. Every entry is rendered from a single open dataset into a consistent, comparable page — app profiles, category indexes, and thousands of head-to-head comparisons.

How it works

The catalogue is a JSON database. A static-site generator renders it into plain HTML: no tracking scripts, no cookie banners, and no JavaScript required to read a page. That keeps the site fast for readers and cheap to run.

How entries are scored

We surface objective facts — license, primary language, setup difficulty, minimum RAM, deployment methods, and approximate community size. Each GitHub-hosted app also carries a computed health score with a fully documented formula. We do not take payment to rank an app higher.

Open data

The dataset is published under CC BY 4.0. Corrections and new apps are welcome — see the submission page.

Icon attribution

App icons are served from a copy of the selfh.st icons collection, used under the CC BY 4.0 license (unmodified). The logos themselves remain trademarks of their respective projects and are displayed for identification only. Apps without an icon in the collection get a generated two-letter tile.
