Buy off-lease business desktops and workstations; skip the rack servers. The $150 Dell R730 on eBay is a trap for a home: it idles at 90–130W (that's $120–170/year in electricity at $0.15/kWh), screams past 45dB under load, and takes proprietary parts. A $120 off-lease ThinkCentre or OptiPlex idles under 15W, is effectively silent, and runs the same containers. Rack gear earns a place only when you need 12+ drive bays or 256GB+ of RAM — and usually not even then.

Where this hardware comes from

Corporations lease fleets on 3–4 year cycles; at end of lease, machines flow through IT asset disposition firms and refurbishers onto eBay, Amazon Renewed, and Back Market by the pallet. The volume is why prices are low and predictable, and why you should be picky: for any common model there are fifty listings, so buy only from sellers with thousands of feedback and 30-day-plus returns. Grades ("A", "B") describe cosmetics, which are irrelevant for a machine living in a cupboard. Windows licences live in firmware and don't matter for Linux. Check the exact CPU on Intel ARK before bidding — sellers routinely list "i5" and let you assume the generation. Two spec details that matter for self-hosting: the T-suffix desktop chips (35W) are what the 1-litre micros use and are ideal; and the iGPU is your transcoding engine — Intel Quick Sync from 8th gen onward handles multiple simultaneous HEVC streams in Jellyfin without a discrete card. Ryzen off-lease stock exists but is thinner and pricier; the used market is Intel's home turf.

The gotchas that eat the savings

Power is the big one. A dual-Xeon E5 v4 tower for $180 with 128GB of RAM looks unbeatable until you meter it: 100W+ at idle costs more than the machine every 18 months, the arithmetic laid out in what your homelab really costs in electricity. Noise: 1U means 40mm fans, and 40mm fans mean a hairdryer; 2U is tolerable, towers are quiet. Proprietary parts: Dell and HP PSUs and motherboards don't interchange with standard ATX; missing drive caddies run $10–20 each; hardware RAID controllers need reflashing to IT mode before ZFS or btrfs should touch the disks. Remote management licensing: iDRAC and iLO basic tiers work out of the box, but the graphical remote console sometimes needs an (easily found, grey-area) enterprise licence. Storage wear: ask for SMART data, or assume the worst and budget a fresh NVMe — used enterprise SSDs with 40,000 power-on hours are usually fine if wear indicators sit under 30%, but verify with smartctl -a on arrival.

The workstation — ThinkStation P520, HP Z4 G4 — is the budget path to ECC memory, 64–256GB capacity, and the x16 slot plus beefy PSU that a used RTX 3090 needs for local LLM work. Prefer the Skylake-W generation and newer; the older Haswell-EP workstations (Z440, P500) idle 20–30W higher for less performance.
